GEOLOGY – Earth Science

Leading the way to the future!

“There hasn’t been a moment when I had the chance to look down on our planet from orbit when I haven’t been amazed at how geology has played a significant role in the development of humankind.â€

quote by James F. Reilly Jr. (NASA Astronaut/Geologist)

Violent volcanic eruptions, catastrophic earthquakes and devastating tsunami causing loss of life and great damage show the Earth to be a dynamic planet. To understand how our planet works, at depth and at the surface, the ideas and principles of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and geography are integrated in the exciting and stimulating studies which make up Earth Sciences.

Why should I study Earth Science?

Geology is an exciting science with many interesting and practical applications. Some Earth scientists use their knowledge of the Earth to locate and develop energy and mineral resources. Others study the impact of human activity on Earth’s environment and design methods to protect the planet. Some use their knowledge about Earth processes such as volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes to plan communities that will not expose people to these dangerous events.

Today we live in a time when the Earth and its inhabitants face many challenges:

  • develop new sources of energy that will have minimal impact on climate
  • locate new sources of metals and other mineral resources as known sources are depleted
  • determine how Earth’s increasing population can live and avoid serious threats such as volcanic activity, earthquakes, landslides, floods and more.

These are just a few of the problems where solutions depend upon a deep understanding of Earth science.

What does the job market look like?

Earth science jobs are plentiful, salaries are robust, and the demand for young and enthusiastic geoscientists is expected to continue growing. This kind of job security is unparalleled in any other field today. Click on the links below.
