Are you concerned about artificial intelligence being used in an unregulated and ethically-questionable manner, and worried that industry is moving forward at breakneck speed with little oversight?

Do you have opinions on how regulation can be used to protect the privacy of Canadians while not deterring leading-edge research and innovation? If so, join our discussion groups on Friday, Feb. 28 or Thursday, March 6. We will be formulating a response to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada’s consultation on their proposals for ensuring appropriate regulation of AI.

“The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) is currently engaged in legislative reform policy analysis of both federal privacy laws. We are examining artificial intelligence (AI) as a subset of this work as it relates specifically to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

“We are of the view that PIPEDA falls short in its application to AI systems and we have identified several areas where PIPEDA could be enhanced. We are seeking to consult with experts in the field to validate our understanding of how privacy principles should apply and whether our proposals would be consistent with the responsible development and deployment of these systems.”

The sessions will occur:

Friday, Feb. 28: 1 p.m. – 2:30 pm in 3H.10
Thursday, March 5: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in 3F.7
