Dzʿ’s Div. 1 Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams off to Nationals!

It was a busy and exciting weekend for our women's and men's Div 1 basketball teams! They were both involved in the provincial playoffs after having both emerged victorious in the quarterfinals played earlier in the week.

The playoffs were held at Cegep Edward Montpetit. In the semis, the women faced the team from Champlain-St. Lambert. Dzʿ came out strong and led 38-29 at the half. They kept it up in the second half for a 71-62 victory. This win earned them a spot in the upcoming CCAA Nationals. The gold medal game on Sunday saw Dzʿ take on Saint-Jean. Despite starting off fast in the 1st quarter leading 16-7, the women eventually succumbed to the strong Saint-Jean team 70-54. We wish the women luck as they head off to Calgary, Alberta next week.

The men were up against Jean-de-Brebeuf in the semis. An early lead by Dwson became a tight game in the 4th quarter. Dzʿ managed to hold on for a 61-56 win. In the gold medal game, the Blues battled against rival Vanier. A back-and-forth first half turned into a dominant second half by the Blues, who won 82-68. The men win gold! they too are off to Nationals next week at Mohawk College in Ontario. Best of luck!

International Women’s Day at Dzʿ

Each year on March 8, International Women's Day marks the day when we are all invited to reflect on the role gender plays in our lives, work and the planet.

Have you ever wondered why March 8? Well, it all started in New York City on March 8, 1857, when female textile workers marched in protest of unfair working conditions and unequal rights for women. It was one of the first strikes organized by working women.

The theme this year is DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality. The goal is to highlight the need for inclusive and transformative technology and digital education.

At Dzʿ, there will be two events marking the day. One is a lunch and book sale co-organized by the DSSU and DTU on March 8 in 7C.5 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. The money raised via the book sale and donations will be donated to Chez Doris, a nearby shelter that offers a wide range of services and programs to meet the basic needs of vulnerable and homeless women. A light lunch will be offered for staff and faculty (in limited quantities).

The second event is organized by the Women/Gender Studies Certificate which is holding a Renaming and Reclaiming of Metro Stations activity and home-baked goods sale in Conrod's (2F.4) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The funds raised will go towards scholarships for Dzʿ students.

This conversation will be hosted by the community of practice members Jeff Gandell (WID), Daniel Goldsmith (DALC), Robert Stephens (AI) & Brian Redekopp (AI).
