12th Annual SALTISE Conference on June 12 & 13

The Supporting Active Learning & Technological Innovation in Studies of Education (SALTISE) conference is dedicated to helping faculty discover evidence-based pedagogy that uses educational technology with the goal of leading to improved learning.
Each year it hosts national and international scholars and provides opportunities for local experts to share best practices in the exciting world of active learning pedagogy and the use of technology via its annual conference.
Educators as Designers: A Practice-Research Conversation is the umbrella under which the 2023 SALTISE Conference is operating. This year the conference will happen on June 12 and 13, 2023 at Concordia University. The conference will give attendees the opportunity to learn from a wide range of experts in their fields at talks, workshops and networking events.
Giving you a peek into what to expect, SALTISE has announced its keynote speakers and they are not to be missed! First is Diana Laurillard, who is a Professor of Learning with Digital Technology at the University College London in the U.K. Her keynote will be "Educators Collaborating to Innovate: The Roles Digital Technologies Can Play." Second, is Kelly Miller who will deliver a keynote entitled "Overcoming Challenges in Active Learning Environments." Kelly is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Physics at Harvard University.
Hosting and running the conference is a significant task that requires the support of many volunteers. You can volunteer for a few hours, and tasks may include registering attendees, directing the flow of people, preparing rooms, serving alcohol (for volunteers 18+), and cleaning up.

Earth Weeks 2023 at ÆßÐDzʿª½±

A full program of activities is happening at ÆßÐDzʿª½± from April 17-28 for students and employees , connect with Nature and learn about ways to live more sustainably.
On Tuesday, April 18, Jonathan Egan’s Introduction to Outdoor Education Class participated in a Bioblitz in the Peace Garden with Biology teacher Brian Mader, who is leading the 1,000 Species in 1,000 Days initiative. For a few hours, the students observed life in the Peace Garden and added to ÆßÐDzʿª½±â€™s count. One way, they observed many kinds of life was by lifting up a slab of old tree trunk in the eco circle of the Peace Garden (pictured).
All students and employees are invited to help identify 1,000 plants, animals and other kinds of life on our city block in downtown Montreal. To date, a total of 455 species have been identified. From April 10-17, the ÆßÐDzʿª½±-Campus Biodiversity Network on the free app had 58 new observations, 12 new species added, and four new observers.

The ÆßÐDzʿª½± community is invited to an online presentation by Vanessa Vakharia, also known as The Math Guru, on Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m. This event, hosted on Teams, will provide valuable insights into strategies for overcoming obstacles and maintaining motivation in math and learning. Faculty members are encouraged to promote the event to their students.

Fine Arts Print Party was a huge success

The Fine Arts Department recently held a Print Party on March 4, providing Visual Arts and Studio Arts students with a fun and stress-relieving mid-semester break. The event was conducted by French Press, a Montreal-based design and screen printing studio that includes ÆßÐDzʿª½± alumni. They shared insights into their journey since graduating from ÆßÐDzʿª½±, which led to the formation of this creative collective.
During the event, students had the opportunity to learn about silkscreen printing and try their hand at printing French Press designs onto t-shirts and tote bags. This experience allowed students to expand their artistic skills and gain practical knowledge in the field. Overall, the Print Party was a huge success!
Oct. 21 workshop on Active Learning in STEM classrooms

Please join us for a workshop that will explore the nuances of Active Learning with a particular focus on STEM classrooms. While aggregate data has shown that Active Learning is beneficial for increasing student engagement, this approach has overlooked individual student experiences and has obscured barriers to inclusion. Participants will discuss opportunities and challenges of Active Learning and explore anti-oppressive approaches to teaching and learning in an Active Learning classroom. While there is a STEM focus, anyone interested in active learning irrespective of discipline is welcome to join and bring their thoughts & questions to the session.
Maurice Riley-Case (they/them) is an Instructional Designer with Concordia’s Centre for Teaching and Learning, focusing on Inclusive Pedagogies. Maurice spent 12 years as an educator, and three years as the Instructional Coordinator for Black Student Flourishing at the Peel District School Board (PDSB) in Ontario. Riley-Case completed their Master of Education at York University where their research considered abolition and reform, and how Blackness is taken up in the education system.

CRISPESH is a centre for applied research and transfer (CCTT) in partnership with ÆßÐDzʿª½± and the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. Their mandate is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the development and promotion of social practices that foster academic, social and professional inclusion for people with disabilities.

70 ÆßÐDzʿª½± students signed up for AI workshops this fall

ÆßÐDzʿª½± AI and are hosting a series of workshops, which will give ÆßÐDzʿª½± students the opportunity to learn AI through hands-on learning. The workshop series will cover a wide range of AI topics including data manipulation, fundamental machine learning models, deep learning, reinforcement learning and other advanced topics.
70 ÆßÐDzʿª½± students are signed up to take part in the workshops. The series of eight workshops will begin this Saturday, Sept. 24 and end on Nov. 19. Students will have the opportunity to present their work and learnings at the end of the program.
This workshop series is available to college students in Quebec and is made possible by the generous funding of a NovaScience Program grant awarded to ÆßÐDzʿª½±AI from the Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation.
