Student Wellness Challenge begins Feb. 15

A Wellness Challenge for Students is being launched Feb. 15

Student Services, Sustainability and Communications have developed a peer to peer model that will encourage students to sustain healthy minds and healthy bodies through awareness and prevention.

Students will learn about how to create positive habits and find motivation from one another to combat the mental and physical burden they may be experiencing. Participants will earn entries into a draw for prizes throughout the semester.

Mental health and well-being are essential to student success. To find out more, students can follow @ on Instagram.


Coming up at the Peace Centre

February 9th, 2021

Starting Feb. 15, Meditation Monday's 12:30 p.m.-1 p.m. with Daniel Goldsmith. This will run throughout the semester. We will also post a pre-filmed meditation video for folks who cannot make the live session: Meditation Monday’s with Daniel Goldsmith – Peace Centre

Feb. 15: Sticky Settler Colonialism with Nisha Toomey, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. open to staff, faculty & students

March 18: Is the Sun Setting on Western Epistemologies? 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. open to Staff & Faculty

March 25: Session II Curating and Contextualizing Contentious Classroom Materials and Challenging Conversations, with David Austin and Shana Haines, moderated by Sabrina Jafralie. 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. - Open to Staff & Faculty

The Resistance & Resilience art exhibition is still up and teachers can request virtual tours from Rhonda Meier.


Tips from Dzʿ colleagues for surviving isolation

Three colleagues recently shared some great tips for surviving isolation. Here they are:

  • From Jesse Lund (Theatre): Put on a vintage Jazz record recorded at a club, pour yourself a drink and enjoy the sounds of being out. Recommendation:
  • From Tiawenti:non Canadian (Student Services-First Peoples' Centre): Find some great podcasts and learn new things. Recommendation: , particularly the episode entitled Crash Course on Mohawk Ironworkers.
  • From Allison Freund (Human Resources): Do breathing exercises for relaxation. Recommendation:

Powerful stories bring Indigenous perspectives to higher education

Storytelling is at the heart of the oral cultures of Indigenous peoples in Canada. A unique project in Quebec led by Dzʿ faculty uses storytelling to advance the inclusion and welcome of Indigenous cultures and students in higher education institutions.

“Our project is about changing the culture in academic institutions, underlining the need for Indigenous people to have leadership roles within these institutions and making sure that Indigenous perspectives are reflected and part of the educational experience for everyone,” explained Michelle Smith, a faculty member of Dzʿ’s Cinema | Communications Department and principal investigator.

Updates to Policy for a Smoke-Free College

January 26th, 2021

The Policy for a Smoke-Free College was updated in November. The main changes to the policy are:

  • Progressive sanctions for students and employees, including fines
  • Cannabis is prohibited
  • Roles and responsibilities have been updated
  • Third-hand smoke (residue that remains on objects) is included
  • Tips and support available for employees through Human Resources and for students through College Nurse Julie Drolet
  • What to do if a student is vaping/smoking during a Zoom class

Professionals & support staff can sign up for Sustainable Happiness

Professionals and support staff, there is an opportunity to take the 24-hour Certificate in Sustainable Happiness (SH) Course this semester. The program will run Feb. 12 through April 9 on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Participants will be introduced to the concept of Sustainable Happiness and explore its implications, both personally and professionally. This is an experiential and applied certificate.

Key topics include: sustainability, connecting with Nature, positive psychology, well-being, happiness, and healthy/sustainable lifestyles. All participants must complete a project that benefits the well-being of themselves, others and/or the planet to obtain the certificate.

Some examples of successfully completed projects last semester were plant-based recipe books, yoga / meditation challenges, going on daily dates with Nature, 30 days of acts of kindness, plant giveaways, vertical gardens at home, family wellness and a zero waste challenge.

Dzʿ reacts to AASHE gold in new video

Students encourage teachers to use Sustainable Happiness in class at Ped Days

January 26th, 2021

At Ped Days on Jan. 20, the tables were turned as students taught teachers for the first time at the annual professional development event for teachers.

Four final-year CRLT students shared Sustainable Happiness with teachers in the hopes of making students and teachers in virtual classrooms more connected, engaged and happy.
