April 5th, 2023

A lively event stopped by Dzʿ on March 29 to move and inspire students and staff. The VIB event is touring campuses across Quebec to promote well-being and health. The event featured a Pound also known as “rocking out” workout, pictured; photo courtesy of RSEQ.

One of College Nurse Julie Gosselin’s student health ambassadors reported: “The participants really enjoyed the event and they liked their free merch. People seemed to really enjoy the Pound session as well since most of them had never done it before

“I think the event was really cool! It was a great way to promote physical activity during a time period when students are stressed and tend to forget the little things we should do to stay healthy.”

An evening with Oliver Jones at Dzʿ March 10

February 22nd, 2023

Honouring legendary Montrealer and musician Oliver Jones and inspiring students are the objectives of a special evening being organized by members of Dzʿ’s Legacy Club with support from Dzʿ staff, including the Campus Life and Leadership team, Community, Recreation and Leadership Training, Continuing Education and Community Services and the Communications Office.

“Oliver grew up in the Little Burgundy neighbourhood, home to the historic Union United Church, which is very close to the former Selby Campus of Dzʿ," said Simeon Pompey of the organizing committee. "Through his work/fame, he has influenced a lot of young Black people in Little Burgundy and Montreal to pursue higher education. It is very fitting that the College has endorsed the initiative to honour him.

“Directly and indirectly, young people’s lives were positively impacted. Through his charity work, Dr. Jones supported initiatives to help youth pursue post-secondary education.”

The evening will include performances, tributes and opportunities for students to ask Dr. Jones questions. There will be guests from community organizations but the VIPs will be Black Dzʿ students and students who are personally invited.

Vigil held at Dzʿ for MMIWGT2S

February 22nd, 2023

The First People’s Centre organized a vigil in the Oliver’s student space at Dzʿ on Feb. 14 to commemorate the MMIWGT2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirited.) There is an epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls  that Indigenous women and girls make up 24 per cent of female homicide victims in Canada, despite only making up four per cent of the country’s female population.

The report cited research that “Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women. … Other than murder, statistics also reveal how Indigenous women consistently experience higher rates and more severe forms of physical assault and robbery than other groups in Canada. Sexual violence is a huge problem in all its forms: Indigenous women are sexually assaulted three times more often than non-Indigenous women, and most of the women and children trafficked in Canada are Indigenous.”

MMIWGT2S to be remembered on Feb. 14

February 8th, 2023

The red dresses currently hanging in the atrium are there in memory of the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans, and 2 Spirited (MMIWGT2S) peoples across North America.

Several Dzʿ students, including Indigenous students working in collaboration with the First Peoples’ Centre, will be organizing an awareness-raising vigil on Feb. 14. Valentine’s Day, typically a day to show love to a significant other, was determined to be the best day for the annual awareness campaign by Indigenous communities. The day is an opportunity to show love to those affected by such violence and to raise awareness of the international crisis.

The entire Dzʿ community is welcome to join the First Peoples’ Centre at 12 p.m. on the Feb. 14 for a vigil in Oliver’s (2C.17).

At the end of the night, judges Andréa Cole (Dean of Creative and Applied Arts), Jacinta Luis (Faculty, Music) and visiting guest judge Chad Lindsay, a jazz music teacher from Vanier College, chose Aliyah Sarimazi to be Dzʿ's entry in the regional contest on March 25 at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. The audience chose Clara Nhiên Lévesque as the fan favourite and she will be the replacement entry should Aliyah not be able to compete in the regionals.
