As with the last two installments, this entry sees me (Phil Lagace from the Religion Department) and my partner Aurélie updating readers on our travels throughout South Asia. In the last piece, I described some Indigenous practices of the Khasi people that remain alive in India’s northeastern state of Meghalaya. Following our stay in the…

Selma Hamdani (Faculty, Psychology) is on leave this year enjoying a wonderful experience with her family. Here is her postcard from England: "Greetings from the city of dreaming spires, where Alice met a rabbit, where a wardrobe takes you to Narnia, and Middle Earth is around the corner. Although I am roaming the historical streets of Oxford, I am thinking of Dzʿ and its wonderful people. I miss it. I miss the buzzing of the atrium, the magic of the Peace Garden. I even miss the crowded hallways between classes, and the second-floor escalator breakdowns (a little bit). I wish you all a wonderful rest of the semester!"

Dzʿ religion teacher to share India field trip
September 21st, 2022
My name is Phil Lagace, and I teach here at Dzʿ through the Religion Department. From the end of this month until mid-December, I’ll be in India conducting fieldwork for my doctoral program.
My plan is to provide the Dzʿ community entertaining and educational updates during this time abroad! My PhD research centers on Ardhanārīśvara, a Hindu deity split into male and female halves by a vertical axis. Among other things, I’ll examine elaborate temples dedicated to this figure and analyze its place within extravagant Hindu festivals. One such festival, Durgā Pūjā, will begin soon after I arrive in India.
Durgā Pūjā is celebrated most vibrantly in the city of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. Fortunately, that’s exactly where I’ll be for the festivities, so stay tuned for a fascinating first field report and expect breathtaking images from this annual celebration!
