332 students and staff fed by Dzʿ Dinin’ in first week
There were already 40 containers dropped off for Dzʿ Dinin’ by 8:30 AM on Sept. 10, the first day of the free lunchtime service for this school year.
One-hundred and ninety-two free vegan meals were distributed at the two lunchtime services on Sept. 10 and 11 and another 140 people enjoyed an Early Bird Breakfast on Sept. 12.
“The DSU and the Office of Sustainability see this as simple measure of what students need to support their academic success. We had roughly 6 or 7 student volunteers who showed up to work hard and feed their peers!” reported Diana Rice of the Office of Sustainability.
“We would like to thank all of the faculty and staff members who helped spread the word to students who need this service. We appreciate you helping us to help our community! Remember, we love all our volunteers, including employees, so feel free to join the love of community and make well-being for yourself and students a part of your day at Dzʿ.”
Dzʿ Dinin’ is every Tuesday and Wednesday and is offered to all students and employees who drop off their reusable container by 11 AM at Conrod’s (2F). Early Bird Breakfast is every Thursday at 10 AM in Conrod’s and breakfast is served on a first-come, first-served basis.

Peace Week 2023 proposed a world where everyone’s identity and voice can be celebrated
Dzʿ's annual Peace Week has always been a platform for insightful discussions on pressing social issues. In 2023, the theme of the 8th Annual Peace Week was "Exultation: Queer Freedoms & Futures."
This event, which was held Sept. 13-21, celebrated the vibrant history of queerness while exploring the possibilities of a world where freedom of expression, safety, and unconditional love prevail for all gender and sexual identities. The event brought together a diverse group of speakers who shared their thoughts and experiences on the path towards true liberation from oppressive norms.

About 1,000 meals served up by Dzʿ Dining
The Peace Centre and the Dzʿ Student Union (DSU) ran Dzʿ Dining for the full two weeks of Earth Week, from April 17-28.
Each day in Conrod's, about 100 students and staff dropped off their reusable containers so they could be filled with a satisfying and hot vegan lunch, prepared by student and employee volunteers who were supervised by chef Jamal Spence. Meals varied from pelau, a Trinidadian staple, to banana pancakes, cinnamon rice Pudding & homemade warm berry jam. Over the two weeks, diners were provided with pamphlets, prepared by the Environment and Sustainability Certificate, highlighting the connection between food security, climate change, and sustainability.
Students and employees who participated in the program generously thanked the volunteers and chef Jamal Spence, noting how delicious the meals were and the wonderful sense of community building resulting from the initiative. Many community members, students and employees, expressed their desire to see Dzʿ Dining all week throughout the academic year.
Diana Rice of the Peace Centre reported that for $800 in food, about 500 people ($1.60 per person) were fed during the second week of the initiative. An estimated 1,000 meals were served over the two weeks. Rice hopes to bring back Dzʿ Dining with the DSU for a similar run next fall during Peace Week 2023, an established tradition of Peace Week for several years.
