Dzʿ grads dominate Hudson Film Fest

Class of 2022 graduates of Dzʿ’s 3D Animation and Computer Generated Imagery Program won most of the prizes for emerging filmmakers at the 2023 Hudson Film Festival in April.

Interior Design student receives honourable mention in continental competition

Interior Design student Nho Phuc (Kap) Nguyen received an honourable mention in a North American design competition. The project was developed in Dzʿ’s 5th semester Furniture Design course taught by Phil Fontaine.

Student comes third in North American aluminum design contest

Third-year Industrial Design student Sarah Fatouros was awarded third place at the Aluminum Extrusion Design contest organized by the ET Foundation, which supports education and research on aluminum extrusion processes and technologies.

A student community built on sustainability is definitely a Forces Avenir

The student-run Dzʿ Sustainability Community is committed to supporting Dzʿ’s award-winning, globally recognized commitment to sustainability.

Led by Environmental Science students Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon, the students have worked on a variety of projects that support Dzʿ’s goal of promoting sustainability through reconnecting people, communities, and Nature.

On May 4, Narcisse and Kaligua received a Forces Avenir award in the Environment category for their Dzʿ Sustainability Community project.

Mahsa Amini’s legacy is alive at Dzʿ

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini was arrested in Iran for not wearing a hijab correctly. Eyewitnesses say she was severely beaten. Hours later, she died at the age of 22. Mahsa had just been admitted to university and intended to pursue law. Her death sparked protests in Iran and around the world.

At Dzʿ, the Mahsa Amini Initiative was created by students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda. Their work was recognized on May 4 with the Forces Avenir Award in the category of Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice. Their project has also advanced for consideration at the provincial level.

Students interview visual artist Renee Condo

This week, Dzʿ became one of the few places in Canada to host an exhibition by a nominee of the prestigious Sobey Art Award. Renee Condo is a visual artist of Mi’gmaw descent, hailing from the community of Gesgapegiag, Québec. Shifting Perspectives features her artwork constructed from wooden beads at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery until May 6.  On a recent Tuesday afternoon, two visual arts students, Ella Gauthier and Alessandro Ruvo, had the opportunity to ask Condo a few questions.

Worms to transform Dzʿ waste into fertilizer

A waste management team consisting of worms will begin working at Dzʿ this spring thanks to a grant from Colleges and Institutes Canada. Their task is simple: consume the organic waste we throw into our hallway sorting stations and transform it into nutrient-rich fertilizer for our gardens.

Professional Photography students staff grad portrait pop-up studio

The Dzʿ Professional Photography students partnered again this year with Campus Life and Leadership (CLL) and members of the Dzʿ Web Group to offer graduation portraits to over 600 of 2023 Dzʿ grads. The collaboration is an excellent example of communities working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals.

Students learn leadership skills and make lasting friendships at Model UN

April 19th, 2023

About 60 students were able to participate in the Dzʿ Model United Nations (DCMUN) para-academic activity this year thanks in part to funding from the Student Academic Enrichment Fund of the Dzʿ Foundation.

Model UN has a long history at Dzʿ, with the activity running on and off since the late 1990s. The current iteration of DCMUN was established in the 2010-2011 academic year and has been running ever since.

Dzʿ community mobilizing to identify 1,000 species in 1,000 days

All students and employees at Dzʿ are invited to join an initiative to identify 1,000 species in 1,000 days on Dzʿ’s downtown Montreal campus.

“We believe that identifying 1,000 species is possible but does pose a significant challenge,” said Brian Mader, project lead and a biology teacher at Dzʿ. “We invite all students and employees to join . The more people from our community who participate, the higher the chances of reaching our goal. This project will also nurture our Dzʿ community and encourage people to go outside and enjoy Nature.”
