Longtime Dzʿ employee, James Richards, has passed away

February 16th, 2022

James Richards, a familiar figure at Dzʿ for almost 20 years, died on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the age of 73. James began at Dzʿ as a security guard in 1994 before joining the staff of Plant and Facilities (now Facilities Management). He retired in 2013.

Apart from his good humour and helping hand in performing his duties, James was an outstanding Dzʿ volunteer. He spent many hours of his free time preparing and staffing Dzʿ’s often prize-winning St. Patrick’s Day float for 15 years. And every December for too many years to count, he could be found behind the bar serving drinks with a wink and a joke at Dzʿ’s holiday parties.

James is survived by his partner Yvonne, his daughter Tara (Chris), grandchildren Dalia and Domenic, and his stepdaughter Vanessa.

Tom Fox, retired Math teacher, has passed away

October 13th, 2021

Tom Fox, an award-winning Dzʿ Math teacher who personified the title Renaissance man has passed away at the age of 73. He will be remembered for his wry humour, his love of math, music and family.

A short excerpt from his obituary captures the essence of Tom’s passion for teaching: “Teaching was an opportunity to make people aware of the beauty of Mathematics and of the importance of that beauty. Teaching came naturally to him. […] His passion for Mathematics provided the context for the teacher he was to become. Fox was a legendary teacher, he made Mathematics accessible to all, inspiring many a student to choose it as a field of study. In 2009 Fox won the Teaching Excellence Award at Dzʿ, and in 2020 he was awarded the Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching in the Course Lecturer Category at McGill University.”

She was pre-deceased by her husband Faruq in 2011, who had been a English teacher at Dzʿ for 30 years between 1974 and 2004 when he retired. Sept. 13 was 15th anniversary and day of remembrance at Dzʿ

September 15th, 2021

Sept. 13 was the 15th anniversary of the Dzʿ shooting. On Sept. 13, 2006, student Anastasia De Sousa lost her life, others were injured and many experienced trauma. For those who survived, including teachers and employees who still work at Dzʿ, the anniversary remains a difficult day. The Peace Garden (on campus near the corner of Sherbrooke and Wood) was established in memory of Anastasia. It was the site of quiet reflection on Monday: /news/dawson-community/today-marks-the-15th-anniversary-of-the-shooting-at-dawson-college/

Everyone in Montreal remembers that day and Dzʿ was in the news:
