Two more students continue legacy of Anne-Marie Howlett’s passion for nursing

At Fall Awards Night on Nov. 24, Susan and Michael Howlett were at ÆßÐDzʿª½± for the presentation of the Anne-Marie Howlett Memorial Award in honour of their late sister and daughter, who was in her first year of Nursing when she passed away tragically 40 years ago.

Work can overcome talent in math says Harry Fainsilber recipient

The inaugural Harry Fainsilber Memorial Award was given to Parnia Akhavansaffar at the Fall Awards Night on Nov. 24. Several family members of the beloved Mathematics teacher who passed away in 2015 were in attendance.

DTU Award goes to student with don’t-give-up message

The ÆßÐDzʿª½± Teachers’ Union Polytechnique Memorial Scholarship is given to a student who has shown a commitment to persevering and overcoming obstacles within their field.

This year, the award was given to Fred-Dgennie Louis, a student in Computer Science, who said: “It means a lot and I am very grateful. It was the least thing I expected since figuring out my path and where I wanted to go has been a struggle. You know after high school, you’re thrown into a completely new environment, and you’re just expected to go on, graduate and then go to university.â€

These students are distinguished by involvement in the ÆßÐDzʿª½± community, giving back or academic excellence and perseverance. At the celebration held on Nov. 24, we marked the 40th anniversary of the Anne-Marie Howlett Memorial Award, the inauguration of the Harry Fainsilber Memorial Award, given in memory of a beloved ÆßÐDzʿª½± Mathematics teacher, and the return of the ÆßÐDzʿª½± Teachers’ Union Polytechnique Memorial Scholarship.

The Awards Office is accepting nominations for the following awards:

David Oliver Award – 1 recipient of $500

​​This award is offered by the Association of ÆßÐDzʿª½± Professionals in memory of David Oliver. David was a beloved member of the Student Services staff who died at a young age and is fondly remembered by his colleagues and the students whose lives he touched. The award is given to a second- or third-year student in good academic standing, who shows great promise in leadership, and who best exemplifies a sense of responsibility and integrity within student activities. ÆßÐDzʿª½± faculty or staff members can nominate students for this award.

Harry Fainsilber Memorial Award – 1 recipient of $500

This award was established by the Fainsilber family in memory of the late Harry Fainsilber, a beloved Mathematics teacher at ÆßÐDzʿª½±. ​The Harry Fainsilber Memorial Award is given to a second-year female student who, during her first year, has demonstrated perseverance and determination in the field of Mathematics. Faculty of the Mathematics Department can nominate students for this award.

Applications are now open for 2023 Loran Scholars

Looking for students who demonstrate strength of character, commitment to service, and leadership potential. The search for the 2023 cohort of Loran Scholars is on and applications are open.

They are looking for applications from students who challenge the status quo, who are insatiably curious, and who want to contribute to a brighter tomorrow —students who are forging their own paths with integrity, courage, and compassion.

There are upcoming webinars in and for educators, youth supporters and students in September and October. Space is limited so register soon.

Remembering Sept. 13, 2006

Tuesday, Sept. 13 will mark 16 years since the terrible day when first-year student Anastasia de Sousa was lost and other members of the ÆßÐDzʿª½± community were wounded.

It could be a time to experience the tranquility of the Peace Garden, which was created by the ÆßÐDzʿª½± community as part of the healing process.

Other legacies from the community response include the Peace Centre, which will be hosting Peace Week Sept. 13-21, and the Sustainability Office, which leads sustainability efforts to promote well-being for all.

Every year, the College and the ÆßÐDzʿª½± Foundation honour the memory of Anastasia with the awarding of the Anastasia de Sousa Memorial Award at graduation.
